KOKESHI: From Tohoku With Love

( second edition ) by Manami Okazaki

What’s it —— Kokeshi are artisanal wooden dolls originated from Tohoku. KOKESHI: From Tohoku With Love takes readers to various Kokeshi artisans’ studios and marvel closely at their dolls, both traditional and modern. With several hundred images accompanied by Okazaki’s interviews with the artisans, the book is a comprehensive guide to Kokeshi, as well as the culture and history surrounding these charming dolls.

What we did —— Inheriting Japan’s resolute professionalism, the author is as meticulous as the artisans when it comes to the book’s presentation. We designed the book’s first edition (proceeds went to Tohoku relief aid) and, for this edition, we suggested changing the book cover from a traditional Kokeshi to a contemporary one with eye-catching motifs to appeal to different types of readers. The author was happy with the idea and she chose a hard cover to give the 250-page volume more substantial texture.

‘[…] a delightful little book that
captures the warmth of
the artisans involved in creating the wooden dolls.’
